三、教學目標 Objectives
本課程將以Philippa Foot的第一本論文集作為上課的教材。此論文集為：Philippa Foot, Virtues and Vices and Other Essays in Moral Philosophy (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2002)。該文集最早出版於1978年，在2002重新出版的版本中Foot新增了一個簡短，但對瞭解其整個倫理學思想而言很重要的前言。在本論文集中Foot除了批評emotivism、R. M. Hare的prescriptivism等之外，也探討了什麼是德性（virtues）、道德理由與理性（rationality）之間的關係，以及道德理由是否是康德所謂的categorical imperatives等等問題。此外在應用倫理學方面，Foot也談到了墮胎與安樂死等問題。而Foot所提出的著名的“The Trolley Problem”，就出現於其探討墮胎的那篇論文中。本課程將採取精讀與仔細討論的方式，對於相關的背景也會作必要的補充。
In this course we will read and discuss with care the papers in the following anthology by Philippa Foot: Virtues and Vices and Other Essays in Moral Philosophy (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2002). Topics to be discussed will include Foot’s criticism of emotivism and prescriptivism, her discussions of the nature of virtues, the form of moral judgement, the relation between moral judgement and rationality, as well as topics in applied ethics such as abortion and euthanasia, etc. As we shall see, Foot’s famous Trolley Problem first appeared in the paper in which the problem of abortion was discussed.

由於Foot的論文都需要透過仔細的討論與講解，才能讓同學對其思想有比較正確而深入的瞭解，因此本課程將採取細讀與細講的方式進行。每週的進度約為論文的3到5頁。
