Broadly speaking, this course is divided into three parts: the first part will deal with the making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ushering in the worldwide human rights movement in the past some seventy years. The second part will take up the challenge of cultural relativism, in particular, the Asian Values Debate. Finally, the third part would turn to human rights situation in Asia, describing and analyzing the human rights records of Asia as a whole and of selected specific Asian countries. If circumstances permit, one or two guest lecturers will be invited. The reading material includes selected books and articles, UN documents as well as reports by international NGOs.
