三、教學目標 Objectives
This course aims to help our 3rd-year students develop confidence and fluency in key communication contexts: socializing, presenting information, using the telephone, and participating in meetings. The focus of this course is the skill of presenting. This course will help our students prepare and perform various presentations, especially in terms of improving their listening and speaking skills in professional and business English. The main purpose is to make students familiar with various considerations of giving speeches, and to practice various discussions and presentations which are useful in their everyday life and future careers. Through meaningful language activities and interesting discussions of different topics, students will get practical and thorough training to use English properly and effectively in such situations as giving speeches, making comments, stating one’s opinion, debating over an issue, and dealing with hesitation strategies and “sticky” situations, etc. On the whole, this course helps students develop their English proficiency in general, and effective presentation skills in particular. It is hoped that this course may lay a firmer foundation for the students’ senior year. Finally, we believe students will find this course valuable and pleasant.

四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
Teaching Plan: Handouts and PPT will be provided in the course. In addition, supplementary materials such as DVD/video clips will be used when necessary. Students are expected to be well-prepared and active in this performance class. Each lesson guides students through a process of warm-ups, lecture, useful expressions, analysis and group discussion, and independent presentation speech. The second term of this course focuses on how to deliver a speech effectively in terms of improving students’ ability to give argumentative speeches, persuasive speeches, demonstrative speeches, and formal impromptu speeches. As a general guideline of the course pace, we will cover one topic every two or three weeks, and there are quizzes along with the course, plus midterm and final exams, which will be conducted in a form of individual speech performance. Attendance is required; three unexcused absences are sufficient grounds for failing the course. (You may request one excused absence with permission, but it can't be on the day of a test or an exam. Otherwise, you should follow the rules imposed by the university.)
